TaxMama’s® EA Exam Newsletter – Issue 6, 2009

News from TaxMama’s® EA Exam Course

Part 2 – Live classes will finish up this Saturday, August 22nd.

But, what a flexible course! One student, hesitantly asked, would TaxMama® be willing to (totally disrupt the course and make a major schedule change) insert a break between the end of the Part 2 course and the beginning of the Part 3 course?

That plaintive request, expressing just how tired everyone was after studying intently for two full months, was widely applauded by all the students in class that day. Due to unanimous agreement, we will be taking a two week break after Part 2.

Part 3 classes will start September 8th, after the Labor Day holiday.
You can register for the Live Course here.

In the meantime, students will be doing some study buddy reviews before sitting for their actual exam.

Good luck to all!

IRS News

There is a lot of talk out there about the hearings Douglas Shulman, IRS Commissioner is holding these days. Shulman announced a far-reaching review of paid preparers on June 4 to produce a comprehensive set of recommendations by the end of this year to boost taxpayer compliance and strengthen industry standards.

Someone just asked,  “Do you know how this relates to enrolled agent status?”

This will not affect enrolled agents.  EAs will still be a distinct and privileged group.

The purpose of the establishing preparer standards, and perhaps a fundamental exam, is to put something in place on a national level.  Presently, on three states in the Union (CA, OR, NJ) require any licensing at all for tax preparers. One state (MA) is just coming on board. There is rampant misrepresentation and incompetence out there. And IRS and the Taxpayers Advocate and all the rest of us, want to stamp it out.

Under a new program, all preparers nationwide will need a national license in order to operate a tax prep business. This license will not give them the authority to represent taxpayers. So being an EA, like being a CPA, will still mean something special.
